Philippe Swyncop (1878 Brussels - 1949 Saint-Gilles) Reclining female nude Painted in a soft, pastose brushstroke and impressionist manner, this delicately characterised, dark-haired beauty presents herself confidently and open-heartedly smiling on white cushions that evoke the association of clouds. Swyncop studied at the Academy in Brussels from 1892 under Jean-François Portaels and Constant Montald, whose influences are particularly eminent in the depiction of female figures and a charming play of colours. The Belgian artist travelled extensively throughout Europe and lived for a time in Spain. He was a member of the artists' group "Le Sillon" and took an active part in the Belgian Salon exhibitions.
