PHILOSTRATE. De la vie d'Apollonius Thyanéen en VIII livres. Paris, widow of Matthieu Guillemot, 1611 2 volumes in-4, marbled calf, double gilt fillet, spine decorated, marbled edges (Binding of the period). Second edition of Blaise de Vigenère's translation, revised and corrected by the Hellenistic printer Fédéric Morel and commented on by Artus Thomas d'Embry. Both editions feature the same burin-engraved portrait of the philosopher Apollonius of Tyana, a neopythagorean preacher and thaumaturgist of the 1st century. There is another issue addressed to the widow of Abel L'Angelier.
Copy of the Indianist Anquetil-Duperron, with handwritten bookplate on the title. Abraham Hyacinthe Anquetil-Duperron (1731-1805) remained famous for having translated and made known in France the Hindu Upanishads and Avesta, after having travelled extensively in India.
Incomplete with the introductory parts of the first volume (23 ff.). Upper hinge cracked, corners dulled and lacking at the head of the first volume, small lacks in the upper margin of pp. 3-6. Slight spotting and small brown spots throughout both volumes.
