First edition. - Gernsheim, Incunabula of British Photographic Literature, no. 172 - First edition of this early photobook with 100 stereoscopies. The high-contrast albumen prints are mounted on plates and accompanied by captions. The underlying photographs were taken in 1859 and 1860 on the occasion of an extensive expedition by Frith through Egypt, today's Sudan and Ethiopia. They show architectural monuments as well as landscapes and everyday scenes. - Spine renewed using the original cover, endpapers renewed. Title page and last few leaves somewhat stronger, otherwise slightly foxed.
