AN ARMORIAL WHITE AND BLUE MAIOLICA DISH, TURIN OR LODI, CIRCA 1730; SLIGHTLY WORN, SOME MINOR EDGE LOSSES
Our dish bears the coat-of-arms of the alliance of Gabriele Verri (1695-1782) with Barbara Dati Cavazzi della Somaglia (1708-1788), a marriage that took place in 1728. Gabriele Verri, from an aristocratic Milanese family, was an important Italian politician, jurist and writer at the time of the transition between the old social and political structure of the Duchy of Milan and the 18th-century innovations associated with the Enlightenment. A diplomat of quality, at home he was one of the protagonists, with Cesare Beccaria, of the movement for the reform in a modern sense of the Milanese penal code. He was the father of Pietro, Alessandro, Carlo and Giovanni Verri (as well as the biological ancestor of Alessandro Manzoni).
The lot was published in 1973 by Brosio (V. Brosio, Rossetti, Vische, Vinovo, Milan 1973, table VII).
