PICASSO] - - ÉLUARD (Paul) [Paris,, Louis Carré,, 1945]... To Pablo Picasso. [Decorated with 8 original drawings]. Pet. in-4 (28 x 22,3 cm), jansenist sand calf binding, smooth spine with gilt author and illustrator, caramel velvet lining and endpapers, folder and slipcase (Creuzevault). Dated 1938, this long poem is taken from the exhibition catalogue of Pablo Picasso's works at the Galerie Louis Carré in 1945. The catalogue, entitled Picasso libre, 21 peintures, 1940-1945, contains black-and-white reproductions of Picasso's works, accompanied by texts chosen by Paul Éluard, including this poem entitled "À Pablo Picasso" on pages 21 to 28. In our volume, only the text of the poem has been preserved, the sheet with the reproductions (pp. 23-24) having been replaced by the one corresponding to pp. 29-30. This copy contains 8 original Indian ink drawings by Pablo Picasso, as follows: Page 21 - Vertical undulating line Ink at left edge of page Page 22 - Head of a man with eyeglasses Ink Page 23 - Head Ink Page 24 - Woman's head Ink Page 25 - Bird on a branch Ink Page 26 - Woman with raised finger Ink Page 27 - Female nude from behind Ink Page 28 - Profile, Woman reclining from behind, Nude leaning forward Ink Apart from two leaves that have already been sold at Artcurial (lots no. 1 and 2, sale on 6 December 2011), respectively the "achevé d'imprimer" and the title leaf of this work, we have been unable to locate the other parts of this catalogue, which are probably also illuminated. The authenticity of these drawings has been confirmed by the Picasso Administration, which has issued a certificate for this volume. A perfectly preserved copy in a Jansenist binding by Henri Creuzevault (absent from the 6 volumes by Colette Creuzevault, which do not feature Jansenist bindings).
