Lot no. 19
PICASSO (Pablo) Autograph letter signed by Pablo Picasso to Mr Ellisen. One page (26 x 19.5 cm on sight), framed under glass. Speaking to Robert Ellissen, Picasso said he was "very pleased to meet you. Would you please pick me up tomorrow at the hotel around noon". The letter is addressed from the Hotel de Russie, via del Babuino in Rome, and is signed "Picasso". Robert Ellissen (1872-1957), an industrialist and collector of French art, was a member of the Société de La Peau de l'Ours, which acquired works by contemporary artists over a period of 10 years. On 2 March 1914, the Société sold the collection it had built up, which included nearly 60 artists, including Van Gogh, Gauguin, Picasso and Matisse, as well as a number of lesser-known artists. The sale, which proved a success, included ten paintings by Picasso. Picasso stayed for several months in 1917 at the Hotel de Russie in Rome, nicknamed "paradise on earth" by Jean Cocteau, who also stayed there. A suite now bears Picasso's name. A few small spots, tiny traces of folds and the beginning of a tear in one of them (the document has not been faded). 0.0 x 0.0 x 0.0 cm 0.0 x 0.0 x 0.0 cm
