Lot no. 101
PICASSO (Pablo). Sueño y mentira de Franco. Paris, Lacourière, 1937. In-folio, publisher's filled cover, two framed engravings 38 × 57 cm. First edition of this surrealist poem by Picasso, reproduced in facsimile and decorated with two aquatint and drypoint engravings.
Songe et mensonge de Franco was created in response to General Franco's coup d'état a year earlier. While the first engraving features satirical depictions of the dictator, the second illustrates the suffering of the people in the tradition of Goya, with the image of The Weeping Woman appearing for the first time.
These works foreshadowed the masterpiece Guernica, painted a few months later.
Edition of 850 copies on Montval paper, this one numbered 423, with a stamp.
Provenance: former Antonio Seguí collection.
