Die Figurationen, von denen seine früheren Arbeiten belebt werden, ordnen sich im Laufe der Entwicklung mehr und mehr der Fläche unter, sie verwandeln sich, wie man den Bildern ablesen kann, mehr und mehr zu einem strukturhaften Gefüge, das teils die Fläche unterteilt und rhythmisiert, teils der Grundfarbe in ihrem Verlauf als Richtungsweiser dient. […] Betrachtet man die reiche Produktion von 1958 an, erkennt man zweierlei, einmal, dass Dorazio ein denkender Maler ist, ein Maler, der wohl weiß, was er tut (nicht warum er es tut), zum anderen, dass die Erfindung seiner feingliedrigen farbigen Strukturen ursprünglich und ins Unendliche fortsetzbar ist. Nicht dass die Methode ihn jemals einengen könnte, sie lässt ihm die Freiheit, die „Leere“ im Sinne des Tao zu artikulieren. Das sichtbare „Netz“, wenn man die Oberfläche vorerst einmal so charakterisieren will, ist ja nicht das Primäre, es liegt über dem Gefüge der farbigen Strukturen, damit dem Auge das Sehen und Erkennen erleichtert werde.“ (Karl-Heinz Hering, in: Piero Dorazio, Ausst.Kat. The figurations which animated his early works, are subordinated more and more to the surface in the development process, they are transformed, as can be read from the pictures, more and more to a structural framework which partly divides and rhythmicizes the surface and partly directs the ground paint in its progression. (…) When one considers the the rich production of 1958, one notices two things: one, that Dorazio is a thinking painter, a painter that probably knows what he is doing (not why he is doing it), and secondly that the invention of his slender colour structures can be continued originally und ad infinitum. So that the method does not constrict him he allows it the freedom to articulate the 'void' in terms of Taoism. The visible 'net', if one wishes to initially characterise the surface in that way, is indeed not the primary, it lies over the framework of the coloured structures, and with that the the eye is relieved of seeing and recognising.''
