Lot no. 163
Pierre ALECHINSKY (1927) Untitled, 1976 Brush-applied ink and aquatint on Chinese paper Signed and dated in pencil, centre right: "Pierre Alechinsky 1976". Annotated left: "C.D vu" (probably for Christian Dotremont vu par Alechinsky) 98.5 x 60 cm Our work here is divided into two parts, the upper and lower, delimited by energetically brushed friezes, typical of Alechinsky's aesthetic vocabulary. In the upper part, the large circular motif in red aquatint is a motif that the artist often used in the 1970s, like a sun swirling and radiating over the composition. In the lower section, two figures appear to be in motion. The man on the left, with the large nose and cap, is probably Christian Dotremont in his Lappish cap. Alechinsky often paid tribute to his dear friend and founder of the CoBrA group, in several works and writings, and in particular in a number of portraits in which he depicted the poet/artist wearing his famous traditional Lappish headgear. The composition and motifs that make up our work remain highly enigmatic, however, and take us back to Alechinsky's world, which is never totally abstract or figurative, but rather a world with its own codes.
