Born and educated in Bordeaux, Marcel-Beronneau soon moved to Paris, where he studied at the École des Arts décoratifs from 1890, then at the Beaux-Arts in Gustave Moreau's class from 1892. This dual initiation is immediately apparent in his work, which combines the influence of the prevailing Symbolism, the mythological world of Moreau and a keen sense of decoration. Beronneau's early works, like those of George Desvallières, owe a great deal to the master of the rue de La Rochefoucauld. In 1897, the artist exhibited at the last Salon de la Rose+Croix, with many of his fellow artists from the Moreau studio. His work was very close to that of Maxence or the first Rouault. As his personality asserted itself, he remained faithful to themes close to Symbolism (Sapho, n°430, Leda, n°441, Orpheus, n°436, Fauns n°432 and 440) and to religious subjects (n°434, 435 and 437) to which he nevertheless gave a strong pictorial quality and a very personal compositional dynamic. His brushstrokes were thicker and more geometric than Moreau's, and he moved towards an aesthetic close to the decorative world of the inter-war period. He took part in numerous exhibitions and designed a number of large-scale decors, and continued his work well into the 1930s, without deviating from his mythological imagination.
