Pierre-Antoine PATEL, known as le Jeune (Paris, 1648 - 1707) Effect of light at sunset in classical ruins animated by figures Oil on canvas Signed and dated 'P. PATEL / 1697' lower left (Restorations) Sunset light effect in animated classical ruins with characters, oil on canvas, signed and dated, by P.-A. Patel the Younger 25.59 x 33.46 in. 65 x 85 cm Provenance: Rémy de Polignac Collection, Bayonne Following in the footsteps of his father, Pierre Patel, nicknamed "the Claude Lorrain of France" by Mariette, Pierre-Antoine Patel specialised in small-scale landscapes in which ancient ruins and figures stand side by side in a harmony of green, grey and blue. Although there is no record of the Patels' visits to Italy, their landscapes bear witness to the artists' enthusiasm for ancient Rome and its monuments, which were widely disseminated through engravings in Europe, as well as for Italy, its light and classical landscapes, relayed in Paris by the works of painters from the north of France who had travelled to the Peninsula and by those of the Italian masters in the collections of the crown and numerous art lovers. Our canvas, signed and dated, is a marvellous example of Patel's work, and stands out for the light of the setting sun offering our sky seductive variations of blues and pinks.
