PIERRE AUGUSTE RENOIR (Limoges 1841-1919 Cagnes-sur-Mer) Paysage. Circa 1910. Oil on canvas. Signed lower left: Renoir. 28 × 46.5 cm. Provenance: - Ambroise Vollard, Paris. - Dr Willi Raeber, Basel. - Private collection, acquired circa 1954 in Basel and by descent to the next generation. - Private collection, Belgium. Literature: - Guy-Patrice and Michel Dauberville: Renoir. Catalogue raisonné des tableaux, pastels, dessins et aquarelles, Paris 2012, vol. IV, p. 136, no. 2903 (with ill.). - Ambroise Vollard: Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Paintings, Pastels and Drawings. Tableaux, Pastels et Dessins, San Francisco 1989, p. 164, no. 648 (with ill.). In 1907, Pierre-Auguste Renoir settled with his family permanently in Cagnes-sur-Mer in search of a climate more favourable to his health. In the last years of his life, the painter suffered from rheumatoid arthritis. The mild climate in the south of France made Renoir's severe illness more bearable. Cagnes-sur-Mer not only offered him a pleasant climate, but also a beautiful landscape that inspired him, which he captured in many of his latest works. During this period, he continued to develop his characteristic style and painted numerous pictures that captured the light and colours of the area. The present work shows a favourite view for the artist: a serene landscape with trees and fields contrasting with a slightly cloudy sky. The overall impression is one of peace and the beauty of nature. Renoir lived in Cagnes until his death in 1919. There he also bought a house with a beautiful park and built a studio. The villa where he lived, called "Les Collettes", is now a museum dedicated to his life and works. * The full tax is charged on this item marked * in the auction catalogue, i.e. VAT is charged on the sum of the bid price plus the surcharge for those items. The VAT will be refunded to Purchasers providing a validly stamped export declaration. ------------------------------------------------- PIERRE AUGUSTE RENOIR (Limoges 1841-1919 Cagnes-sur-Mer) Paysage.
