Lot no. 147
Pierre BREBIETTE (c. 1598-1652). Giants heap rocks to attack Heaven. Sanguine, toning down of sanguine. Stains and small hole lower right. Label "Bloemaert" stuck on the mount. This drawing is to be compared with the projects drawn by Brébiette for the "Tableau des Vertus et des Vices, Tableaux des Temples des Muses", a work by Michel de Marolles based on a design by Jacques Favereau, which was published in 1655. Brébiette's drawings were engraved by Cornelis Bloemaert. Our design differs from the one chosen for the engraving; it is probably an earlier draft. There is another drawing of this composition in reverse (on a proof background?) in the Weimar Museum (see French Drawings of the XVllth and XVIllth Centuries in the Weimar Museums, G+H Verlag, Berlin, 2005, no. 6, p.55 ill.). For an overview of the illustrated work by Marolles, see Paola Pacht Bassani and Barbara Bréjon de Lavergnée, Pierre Brébiette, Cahiers du Dessin Français N19, published by De Bayser. Several drawings for engravings are listed (n°24-25-26, representative.) Expert: Cabinet De Bayser, Paris. Dimensions: 23.5 x 18.3 cm.
