Accidents and restorations
Daughter of Jacques-Louis-Henri Sobieski, son of King John III of Poland, and wife of Jacques François Stuart, Marie-Clémentine Sobieska retired at the end of her life to the convent of Santa Cecilia in Rome, where she died piously. As the goddaughter of Pope Clement XI, she had the honour of being buried in St Peter's Basilica.
The letter at the foot of Marie-Clementine Sobieska's name bears the date 1730, probably referring to the date she retired to a Roman convent.
For a similar iconography of the Queen at prayer, see the engraving by Girolamo Rossi II the Younger (1692-1768) after Domenico Maria Muratori (1661-1742) (British Museum, inv. 1850,1014.473.A) and the engraving by Miguel de Sorello (1700-1765) after Agostino Masucci (1691-1758) (Scottish National Portrait Gallery, inv. SP III 77.3).
