He was the first professor to perform anatomical dissections in public at the "Jardin royal des plantes médicinales" (Jardin des Plantes). This work, "L'Anatomie de L'Homme", first published in French in 1690, was a huge success. It was translated into several languages, including Latin and Chinese, and remained in print for more than half a century. The title referred to the dispute over the circulation of blood, which was still topical at the time.
