Pierre DULIN (Paris, 1669-1748 ) Portrait of a hunter with his dogs and a servant holding his horse Oil on canvas Signed 'P. Dulin / pinxit' lower right Portrait of a hunter with his dogs and a servant holding his horse, oil on canvas, by P. Dulin 50.79 x 41.73 in. 129 x 106 cm Provenance: anonymous sale; Paris, Hôtel Drouot, Mes Tessier et Sarrou, 18 June 2014, no. 82 (as Portrait de M. Tarbocher de Beaumont en chasseur by Jean-Baptiste Oudry) ; Acquired at this sale by the current owners A pupil of Bon de Boullogne, Pierre Dulin followed the traditional academic path: Grand Prix (obtained twice in 1696 and 1697), a stay in Rome, reception at the Académie in 1707 as a history painter and exhibitions at the Salon from 1737 to 1747. Pierre Dulin worked for the Duke of Richelieu and is famous for his illustration of the coronation of Louis XV in Reims on 25 October 1722: the album of his drawings is kept in the Graphic Arts Department of the Musée du Louvre. Although we are mainly familiar with his history paintings, we know from his after-death inventory that he also painted portraits. Our painting probably corresponds to the description in no. 104: a hunter with a valet, dogs and game, valued at 35 livres (cf. Daniel Wildenstein, Inventaire après décès d'artistes et de collectionneurs français du XVIIIème siècle, Paris, 1967, p. 154). The warm colours, the corpulence of the figures and the vibrant brushstrokes reveal Dulin's affiliation with the colourist movement. Pierre DULIN (Paris, 1669-1748 ) 129 x 106 cm
