Comment: This bronze by David d'Angers is the perfect Romantic sculpture. Using Greek mythology, and more precisely the figure of the great Greek strategist Philopœmen, our artist brings to life the values of courage that are characteristic of the heroism adulated by the artists of this movement. Having just received a spear in the thigh, our hero, still standing and far from giving up, pulls it out himself, ignoring the extreme pain it causes him, and prepares to go back into battle.
The model of our bronze, a colossal piece sculpted in marble, was delivered by David d'Angers to the State and then placed in the Tuileries Gardens in September 1837. It entered the Louvre in 1859, was moved back to the Tuileries for a time and was finally placed in the Richelieu wing in 1870 (inventory number LP 1556).
