In Paris in 1423, the lord of Grigny is courting the beautiful glove-maker Catherine, while a leprosy epidemic is spreading through the city. He wants to flee Paris and take Catherine with him, but she won't go. Poverty and pillage reign in the village. A troupe of lepers arrives, led by a hooded woman, Catherine. "They prowl around the church like wolves and end with a frenzied round", then head for the castle. Catherine, recognising the arms of the Grignys, makes a point of entering; she is announced by the valet; the lord rushes in and embraces her madly: "The girl, still hooded, slowly disengages herself, leans against the wall and starts laughing, holding her ribs. The Lord of Grigny stared at her in amazement. Catherine then slowly lifted her bonnet, revealing a noseless face eaten away by leprosy. She advanced on the livid, strengthless Lord of Grigny, who stretched out his arms to repel the death that was coming".
