Book size: 32,5 x 26 cm.   In 2007, three French museums dedicated an exhibition to Othon Friesz: La Piscine-musée d’Art et d’Industrie de Roubaix, the Musée d'Art Moderne de Céret and the Musée d'Art Moderne André-Malraux (MuMa) in Le Havre, the painter's birthplace. They called the exhibition “Othon Friesz. Le Fauve baroque.” This title is no coincidence, for just as Friesz burst onto the Fauvist scene alongside his great friend Raoul Dufy and associated with Matisse, Rouault, and Marquet at the 1905 Salon d'Automne in Paris, it is also true that his connection with this movement did not even last five years, as his Fauvist paintings, although the most distinguished, constitute only a tiny part of his work. Thus, we can affirm, as the Céret museum does, that “no other Fauvist artist would go so far in the exaltation of line and freedom of form,” but most of his artistic career was rather distant from this artistic movement, influenced first by the rigor of Paul Cézanne's form and later by a conservative climate that manifested itself in the artistic field in the form of a “return to order,” as explained by the Céret Museum mentioned above.   In addition, these changes and developments in his career led him to create a highly diverse body of work, with landscapes in vivid, expressive colors; others more realistic, with a more classical and academic technique and a more sober color palette; paintings where Cézanne's clear influence can be seen in the composition and separation of layers; works with a clear constructivist tendency; and landscapes, figures, and still lifes with a baroque air that bring us back to the Friesz retrospective with which we began our explanation.   Reference bibliography: - Musée d'Art Moderne de Céret.
