Pieter Andreas Rysbrack was the son of the Antwerp landscape painter Pieter Rysbrack (1655-1729) and his wife Genoveva Compagnon. His father had been working in Paris since 1678. Pieter Andreas moved to Antwerp with his parents around 1692. He learnt to paint from his father and became a member of the Guild of St Luke in Antwerp in 1711.
He moved to London with his younger brother, the sculptor John Michael Rysbrack (1693-1770), around 1620. Another brother, the still life painter Gerard (1696-1773), joined him and John Michael in England.
One of the most important commissions Pieter Andreas received was from Lord Burlington (1694-1753) for a series of country house portraits of Chiswick House. Rysbrack thus joined a long tradition of Flemish painters who produced topographical paintings of the estates of the British aristocracy, including artists such as Jan Siberechts (1627-1703), Peter Tillemans (1684-1734) and Hendrik Frans de Cort (1742-1810).
The painting offered here is archived in the RKD, The Hague, as an autograph work by Pieter Andreas Rysbrack.
