Lot no. 3041
PIETER GERRITSZ. VAN ROESTRATEN (Haarlem c. 1627-c. 1698 London) Still life with flowers in a silver vessel, a ball, a clock and other objects on a draped table. Oil on canvas. 66.7 × 53 cm. Provenance: - Gallery Brian Koetser, London, 1966. - Acquired from the above, Heinz Kuckei Collection, Berlin. - By inheritance, European private collection. Exhibition: London 1966, Brian Koetser Gallery, London, March-June 1966. In this painting, the still life painter Pieter G. van Roestraten skilfully reproduces the materiality of the various still life elements and creates an opulent composition of precious objects on a draped table. Almost like a tompe-l'oeil, the tablecloth protrudes visually into the viewer's space and draws the eye. Born in Haarlem, the Dutch artist Roestraten was a still life painter who was a pupil of Frans Hals (1582-1666) in his early years. Roestraten went to England in 1695, where he was introduced to the court of Charles II. He was a close friend of Peter Lely (1618-1680). Dr Fred G. Meijer confirms his authenticity on the basis of a photograph, for which we thank him.
