Lot no. 2713
Pieter II Brueghel (c.1564-1637/38), follower of, Summer: the harvest, 19th c., oil on canvas, 47x60 cm
Good condition
Good tension and flatness of the canvas
The original canvas has been lined. However, this does not appear to be the result of major damage, as no tears have been detected.
Good adhesion of the lining
There is a network of age-related cracks on the canvas, indicating the location of the old stretcher.
Very good adhesion of the paint layer
Several minor retouches:
- left border
-upper left corner
-centre of upper border
-a few scattered dots of retouching
These retouches are visible to the naked eye because they have oxidised and therefore faded. They are far more extensive than the actual damage to the work and represent less than 2% of the total surface area of the painting.
There are small gaps of less than 1 mm in an area measuring approximately 3x3 cm in the tree behind the woman with the basket (see photo).
The varnish layer has been cleaned, causing slight wear to the paint layer.
The old varnish is still visible, however, in the form of small brownish spots in the crevices of the paint layer.
Presence of a homogeneous, satin-finish, transparent restoration varnish layer
