Lot no. 11
PIETER MEULENER
(Antwerp, 1602 - 1654)
Battle Scene
Oil on canvas, 143X201 cm
Provenance:
Genoa, private collection
Son of Jan de Moulener, Pieter was first a pupil of his father and then of Sebastian Vrancx and Snayers. In 1631 he became master of the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke. After 1645 he lightened the colour range of his palette and approached the manner of Palamedes Palamedesz, with whom he was often confused. The canvas under scrutiny finds precise comparisons with the one sold at Sotheby's in London on 12 July 2001, lot 181 (fig. 1), also typical of his early production and early maturity, which in the colours, as well as in the movements of troops on the background, can also be compared with the later canvas depicting the siege of Magdeburg signed and dated 1650.
