The most famous of these small panels are those by Melchior de Bout, bearing the elegant MB intaglio mark in a square. Fred Meijer draws our attention to a small corpus of works by Pieter van den Bosch, with a few signed and dated examples1 from his Paris period around 1639, for which the painter used a type of prepared panel similar to that of our painting. 1 - Of particular note is the panel in the National Gallery in Prague (inv./cat.nr.
