Annotated '800' in ink on the prepared panel verso
(Minor restorations and restoration to panel)
Composition with copper and tin dishes, oil on oak panel, by P. van den Bosch
9.84 x 12.79 in.
25.0 x 32.5 cm
The reverse of our prepared panel has a layer of chalk and glue, typical of the small Antwerp panels exported to Paris. The most famous of these small panels are those by Melchior de Bout, bearing the elegant MB intaglio mark in a square. Fred Meijer draws our attention to a small corpus of works by Pieter van den Bosch, with a few signed and dated examples1 from his Paris period around 1639, for which the painter used a type of prepared panel similar to that of our painting.
1 - Of particular note is the panel in the National Gallery in Prague (inv./cat.nr. O 10447).
We would like to thank Fred Meijer for suggesting the attribution of this work and for his help in writing this note.
