Lot no. 17
Pietro BERRETINI (born in Cortona in 1594 - 1669) known as Pietro da CORTONA
Study of figures in clouds.
Drawing in black stone on the recto and sketch in black stone on the verso.
Height 14 cm high
Width: 18.5 cm
Note: The drawings of Pietro da Cortona, whose collaborator was Ciro Ferri, have often been confused with those of his disciple. This unpublished drawing clearly comes from a notebook and bears obvious similarities to those kept at the Istuto nazionale per la grafica in Rome. Drawn in a darker black stone than those by Ciro Ferri, its nervous, elliptical ductus is a perfect expression of the search for balance between several figures on a cloud, probably to be considered as an idea for a fresco for a vault. It seems possible to place him in the last years of his Roman career, or in his mature period.
