Croce, dedication and date Naples November 1896 Provenance: Turin, private collection Pno, private collection Pietro Fragiacomo is unanimously recognised as one of the most significant and refined Italian landscape painters, capable of translating visual reality into a lyrical dimension of intense poetic suggestion. His painting, although close to Impressionism in its luministic vibration and freedom of brushstroke, is distinguished by a profoundly personal character, where the objectivity of observation merges with an intimate and meditated sentiment. The technically impeccable brushstroke becomes an instrument of emotional introspection: the colour, modulated with sensitivity and measure, restores not only the image of the landscape, but also the atmosphere, silence and memory of places. Fragiacomo chose to represent only the landscapes he knew and loved, establishing a relationship of profound spiritual affinity with them and the people who inhabited them. His stays in Paris in 1899, Munich and Constantinople offered him stimuli and suggestions, but from them he drew only a few sketches and studies, never completed works: his true inspiration remained tied to his native lands.
