The Englishman described in the closed castle. Oxford and Cambridge [Paris], s.n. [Jean-Jacques Pauvert], 1953. In-8, paperback. First non-commercial edition. One of 350 numbered copies reserved for the author and subscribers. The typography and layout of the book, published clandestinely by Jean-Jacques Pauvert, were designed by Hans Bellmer. Bellmer was also to have illustrated the book with seven etchings, but he delivered the copperplates too late for them to be included in the edition. (Pauvert sold them to Georges Visat, who published them in 1967, in Mode d'emploi, with a text by Bellmer). The justification announces a limited edition of 350 copies, reserved for the author and subscribers; in reality, J.-P. Dutel reveals, a thousand were printed. The Englishman described in Le château fermé - a "rather abominable book", according to its author, "an erotic tale as sadistic and scandalous as could be, carried to the last extremity" - was only admitted by Mandiargues when it was republished by Gallimard in 1979. The original edition had been condemned and seized in June 1955. Le Lis de mer. Paris, Robert Laffont, 1956.
