Provenance: Galleria Joan Prats, Barcelona (stamp) Rhenish private collection Juan Hernandez Pijuan is one of the most important spanish painters of the generation who started their training directly after the spanish civil war. Originally from Barcelona, he could build upon the influences of Picasso and Miro as well as his immediately preceeding generation of "Dau al Set" group, whose most prominent representative was Antoni Tàpies. Unlike them however, he continued throughout his whole life with traditional media like painting, drawing and print. Furthermore he cited the artists of the american abstract expressionist colour-field painting as influence, especially the circle of Rothko to which Theodoros Stamos as well as the italian pianter Giorgio Morandi counted. Of the one he admired the consistancy with wich she used simple forms and a reduced colour palette to create pictorial moods. Of Morandi he cites the similarity, that not the object for example a flask or mountain is important, but the space. The almost monochrome paintings of Pijuan can be followed back to the desolate landscape around his house, 150 km outside of Barcelona.
