First edition of one of the iconic books illustrated by Mathurin Méheut, containing 50 colour plates mounted on tabs and numerous two-tone illustrations in the text. It was published under the direction of the decorative painter Maurice Pillard-Verneuil, who wrote the text based on drawings by Méheut during his two years at the Roscoff biological station. Lightly stained boards, spine a little faded.
