Lot no. 228
PINDARE. Olympia, Pythia, Nemea, Isthmia. Antwerp, Christophe Plantin, 1567. In-16, stamped fawn calf, cold-engraved plate on the boards with a rich decoration of interlacing, spine decorated with cold-engraved fleurons, gilt and chased edges (contemporary binding). An "esteemed and rare edition", according to Ruelens and De Backer, in which the Greek text and the Latin translation are printed side by side. "This edition, reputed to be very correct, is rarer than that of Estienne [of 1560], of which it is a copy" (Brunet). The volume was bound without the second part, devoted to eight other Greek lyric poets; however, these two parts were also sold separately. An attractive copy in contemporary stamped calf, with chased edges. Some old handwritten annotations. Corners and headpieces missing, rubbed, one white endpaper removed. Brunet, IV, 659 - Ruelens & De Backer, 67:4 - Voet, 2056 - Adams, P-1229.
