Oil on canvas, 111X94 cm (2)
Provenance:
Count Ranieri Sanminiatelli of Vignamaggio in Chianti (?)
Munich, Hampel, 27 June 2024, lot 458 (as Maria Giovanna Battista Clementi known as La Clementina)
The paintings bear a collector's attribution to the Turinese painter Clementi, also adopted in the Hampel catalogue of 2024. The painter, who specialised in portraits, was active mainly at the court of Savoy where she worked according to documentary records from 1722 until 1755. Her training was with the court painter Curlando and the style of the works reflect the influence of French art, achieving a particularly recognisable style, with the use of vivid and brilliant tones, especially in the drapery, to describe the tactile effects of the armour and the red cloak edged with ermine, demonstrating an effective rendering of the iconography.
