Lot no. 152
NEAPOLITAN PAINTER OF THE 16TH-18TH CENTURIES
Still Life of Fish
Oil on canvas, 96.5X111 cm
Provenance:
Genoa, private collection
This interesting still life bears a collector's attribution to Giuseppe Recco, however, certain aspects of style, such as the iridescent tenor of the fish, suggest Francesco della Questua, (? ca. 1639 ; Naples, 1723), an artist perhaps of Spanish origin who distinguished himself in this peculiar pictorial genre and whose reference models were Luca Forte, Giovan Battista Ruoppolo and, indeed, Giuseppe Recco. The Naturalism expressed by his creations responds to the best examples of 17th century Naturalism, often reworked according to a suggestively archaic sensibility.
