VENETO PAINTER OF THE 18TH-19TH CENTURY
Capricci with Palladian buildings
Oil on canvas, 55X76 cm
Provenance:
Milan, Salvetti Gallery (second label on the back)
Milan, private collection
Similar to the preceding canvas, this painting depicts a Palladian transfiguration of the Grand Canal crossed by a bridge reminiscent of the one designed by the famous architect, but with five arches and a flattened dome and niche roof. A three-storey circular building appears on the left, with a rectangular portico decorated by columns, pillars and sculptures. Venetian houses can be seen to the left and right of the bridge, to the left stands a bell tower close to that of the church of San Pantalon, to the right another similar to that of San Polo can be glimpsed (Constable ; Links 1989).
