18TH CENTURY VENETIAN PAINTER
The Regatta at Ca' Foscari
Oil on canvas, cm 66X89
The painting takes as its model the famous view painted by Canaletto between 1732 and 1735, preserved in Windsor and repeatedly replicated by the artist and Francesco Guardi. The scene was later taken up by Visentini in his album of engravings of 1735 and preparatory drawings are known to be in the Correr Museum and the British Museum. Concerning the many Canalettian replicas and variants of this painting, see what Constable says, but remember that the versions in the National Gallery in London and that of the Duke of Bedford can be dated between 1735 and 1741, by virtue of the coat of arms of Doge Alvise Pisani who was in power at the time.
