PLINIO NOMELLINI Leghorn, 1866 - Florence, 1943 Venice Signed P Nomellini bottom left Oil on panel, 25X32 cm Provenance: Italy, private collection A pupil of Fattori, in his early works he still felt the influence of the Tuscan school in both conception and technique, while in his later period he approached the Impressionist movement, adopting a Divisionist technique. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence where, as mentioned, he came into contact with the Macchiaioli, and in 1890 he moved to Genoa, where he was influenced by Divisionism, characterising his works with the use of small touches or lines of pure colour that, observed from a distance, blend into the viewer's perception, creating effects of light and movement. Nomellini is considered an important figure in the Italian art of transition between the 19th and 20th century and represents a connection between 19th century realism and the new chromatic and symbolic experiments of the early 20th century verism. The Venice in the catalogue shows a personal arrangement of the figures and the lively expression that animates each one of them, realised with vivid and vibrant touches of colour.
