Lot no. 53
POE (Edgar Allan). Adventures of Arthur Gordon Pym. Paris, Michel Lévy, 1858. In-12, purple half-chagrin (period binding). First edition of Charles Baudelaire's translation.
Also included: VERNE (Jules). Le Sphinx des glaces. Paris, Hetzel, s.d. [ca. 1897]. Large in-8, red percaline, polychrome and gilt decoration with world map, smooth spine with lighthouse, gilt edges (Publisher's binding). First illustrated edition, with 68 illustrations by Georges Roux, including 20 large colour engravings and a map, in a very fresh map binding. Some foxing in the text.
The Ice Sphinx, dedicated to Edgar Poe, is presented as a sequel to The Adventures of Arthur Gordon Pym. While Poe's novel has a fantastic ending, Verne gives a rational explanation at the end of the story.
