(Caravaggio, c. 1497-c. 1543 Messina)
Triumph of a Roman hero.
Pen and brush and brown ink, traces of black pencil, heightened in white.
31 x 19.5 cm. Framed.
Provenance:
- Jean Marc Du Pan Collection (1785-1838), Geneva, Lugt 1440.
- Private ownership Switzerland.
Reproduction after Polidoro da Caravaggio's lost façade paintings at the Palazzo Milesi in the Via della Maschera d'Oro in Rome. The frescoes were completed shortly before the Sacco di Roma in 1527 and achieved great fame in the following decades, as numerous drawings and prints attest. Such copies were probably not made before the paintings, as these were not recognisable in detail from street level, but were based on drawings or reproductions of engravings made by Giovanni Battista Gelestruzzi and his pupil Giovanni Francesco Venturini, among others. Given the general popularity of Polidoro's frescoes, it is not possible to identify the artist.
