A rare first collective edition of the writings of the humanist Angelo Ambrogini, known as Angelo Politien (1454-1494), a native of Montepulciano and one of the leading figures of the Florentine Renaissance. This edition of Politian's complete works, the most reliable, albeit posthumous, was prepared by Giovanni Francesco Pico with the help of Mainardi from Ferrara, Zanobi Acciaioli and Pietro Baldi del Riccio, known as Pietro Crinito, a faithful disciple of Politian, and revised by Alessandro Sarti and other humanists. It is dedicated to Marino Sanudo. Following Politian's works proper are his translations of the Historia de Imperio post Marcum by Heriodianus, the Enchiridion by Epictetus, the Problemata by Pseudo-Alexander of Aphrodite, the Narrationes amatoriæ by Plutarch, and the Stilus et character psalmorum by Saint Athanasius. "According to Renouard, this rare edition, one of the finest to have come out of the Aldine press, is larger than that of Florence, 1499. A superb copy of this precious Aldine incunabulum, with wide margins and remarkably fresh, in a magnificent antique binding of a rare type. This is a truly elegant central European monastic binding, probably executed in Bohemia in the late sixteenth or early seventeenth century.
