Fratelli Alinari, Florenz. - Im "Cow"-Triptychon greift Lichtenstein sein gleichnamiges Gemälde von 1974 auf, das eine Hommage an Picassos Stierserie von 1945 darstellt, in der der spanische Künstler über eine Reihe von Stierdarstellungen das wilde Tier schließlich als Strichzeichnung wiedergibt. Lichtenstein beginnt ebenfalls mit einer figurativen Darstellung, verwandelt das Tier jedoch sukzessive in eine Formensprache geometrischer Flächen, Streifen und Punkte. Unverkennbar kommt sein knallig-buntes Pop-Vokabular zum Vorschein, das er geschickt mit einem minimalistischen Akzent verbindet und ganz den avantgardistischen Tendenzen seiner Zeit entspricht. - Unser Blatt das linke, figurative Element des Triptychons. Lichtenstein also begins with a figurative depiction, but gradually transforms the animal into a formal language of geometric surfaces, stripes and dots. His brightly coloured pop vocabulary is unmistakable, which he skilfully combines with a minimalist accent and is entirely in keeping with the avant-garde tendencies of his time. - Our sheet is the left-hand, figurative element of the triptych.
