Brasch, Hans
Portrait of a young girl. 1923. oil on fibreboard. 47 x 31.2 cm. Signed and dated. Framed in gold-coloured frame.
Hans Brasch, the son of the stage painter Johannes Brasch, studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule and the Akademie der Bildenden Künste Karlsruhe from 1904 to 1908 as a master student of Hans Thoma. With the aim of taking over his father's business, he acquired comprehensive craftsmanship, a good knowledge of materials and a mastery of a wide variety of techniques. Even before the war, he became a well-known portraitist and created a series of carefully observed yet sensitive portraits. "He always struggled and struggled for the essence of things and did not rest until he had captured their archetypal whole, (...) he never allowed himself a mere "similar" portrait, he sought to capture the essence of the personality in colouring and composition." (Helga Brasch-Schwenk in: Stifung Kulturimpuls, https://dokumentationen.kulturimpuls.org/biografien/1424, last call 30.01.2025). - The work verso with another portrait painted over. - Slightly dusty on the surface, varnish somewhat yellowed, with fine and barely noticeable craquelure in places, no retouches visible under UV. Overall in good condition.
