Very rare first edition of Plieningen's German translation of Pliny's Panegyric on Emperor Trajan. - VD16 P3501. - BM, German Books 704 - Adams, P 1550 - Goedeke I, 447, 2 - Opulently decorated Strasbourg edition of Pliny's panegyric, in the translation by Dietrich von Plieningen (ca. 1432-1520). - Missing leaves 5 (Ai), 8 (Aiii, white) and 45 (Hi). - The three missing leaves masterfully completed by hand in black and red ink over pencil on old paper. The first 5 leaves bound differently after the title leaf to VD16 P3501. Spine slightly rubbed, some leaves fingerstained and soiled in the margins and with slightly visible, narrow waterstains, overall a clean copy of this richly decorated and extremely collectible rarity due to the missing leaves copied in an unusual manner by an skilful hand. With half-paged title illustration as well as three-part pictorial frames around red and black title, wood-cut portrait medallion of Emperor Trajan, wood-cut printer's mark and numerous ornamental and figurative wood-cut borders. - Very rare first edition of Plieningen's German translation of Pliny's Panegyric on Emperor Trajan. - Opulently decorated Strasbourg edition of Pliny's panegyric, in the translation by Dietrich von Plieningen (ca. 1432-1520). - Missing leaves 5 (Ai), 8 (Aiii, white) and 45 (Hi). Spine very slightly worn, some leaves finger-stained and soiled in the margins, as well as with slightly visible, narrow water-stains, overall a clean copy of this richly decorated rarity, due to the skilful copies of the missing printed leaves highly collectible.
