Lot no. 51
POUQUEVILLE (François-Charles). Voyage de la Grèce. Paris, Firmin Didot, 1826-1827. 6 volumes in-8, fawn half-basane, smooth spine decorated, marbled edges (Binding of the period). Second and best edition of this work on modern Greece, revised, corrected and enlarged from the original of 1820-1821. Illustrated with 22 out-of-text maps and plans, some with as many as 38. Pouqueville (1770-1838) was French consul general to the pasha of Janina, then to Patras. A convinced philhellene, his main concern in this work was to depict the oppressive state in which the Greeks found themselves under the yoke of the Turks and to bear witness to the crimes and abominations perpetrated by Ali Pasha. Handwritten ex-libris to the titles, including Boissonade to the first volume (possibly the Hellenist J. F. Boissonade de Fontarabie). Scattered foxing and spotting, bindings a little rubbed. Quérard, VII, 315 - Chadenat, n°155 - Droulia, n°1397.
