Lot no. 56
POUQUEVILLE (François). Voyage en Morée, à Constantinople, en Albanie et dans plusieurs autres parties de l'Empire othoman pendant les années 1798, 1799, 1800 et 1801. Paris, Gabon et Cie, 1805; 3 vol. in-8 (204 x 125 mm), glazed calf, decorated smooth spines, gilded greek script on the boards (Period bindings). 3 plates, one double, 2 maps (Janina Plain in Albania and Tripolitza in the Morea) and a repl. table.
First edition. Captured on his return from the Egyptian Expedition by Barbary pirates and then by the Turks,
Pouqueville was taken prisoner in Tripolitza and then in Constantinople, but thanks to his talents as a doctor he obtained the favour of exploring the neighbouring regions. He noted the antiquities but above all came into contact with the Greek population, oppressed by the Turks, who had not forgotten their glorious past. This work is one of the first testimonies of the nascent philhellenic movement. Its international success ensured that this movement spread among the greatest minds of the time.
