Lot no. 842
Magnificent monumental KPM Berlin lidded vase with floral decoration in blue painting, originally commissioned by Frederick the Great
Baluster-shaped body with rounded shoulder, merging into a fluted neck and flaring rim above a raised, multi-jointed round foot. Domed lid with triple ball finial. Side handles as imposing, highly sculpted, gilded lion mascaron heads, surrounded by lavish rocaille foliage. Delicate yellow and bluish accentuated staffage, partly with border bands. Large "German flower" decoration on both sides of the wall with arrangements of blooming tulips and peonies in polychrome, underglaze blue painting "en camaieu". Corresponding floral decoration on the base. Surrounding relief ornamental borders of acanthus foliage and medallions. Rich gold decoration, matt and polished. Designed after the Meissen model, probably by J. J. Kaendler, c. 1757 - 1760, remoulded by KPM Berlin c. 1850, registered model no. 4133, marked "8760" in black. Sceptre and painter's mark. H. 101 cm.
Impressive vase model in the style of the French Baroque around 1700, which was originally commissioned by Frederick II of Prussia around 1757 in the Meissen manufactory according to his own ideas in two variants, more precisely "1 white with lion heads and heavily gilded" and "1 painted with blue German flowers (and partially gilded)". Two further examples were added around 1760. They were intended for outdoor display in Sanssouci Palace, with the vases with lion heads standing on the upper terrace of the Frederician palace and those with flowers in front of the picture gallery in the palace park until well into the 20th century. In 1850, KPM Berlin was commissioned to mould this vase model in the same size as the Meissen model. An almost identical model with a slightly different colour scheme can be found in the Dolmabahce Palace in Istanbul.
