Magnificent George III centrepiece in the original wooden box. Sterling silver and ruby red glass. On four slender legs with feet in the form of palmette leaves, a filigree frame of open-worked, relief-worked bows and leaf festoons, flower rosettes and high oval medallions with variously depicted crater vases. Above a heavily waisted and gadrooned shaft ending in a delicately net-like, boat-shaped basket bowl with corresponding medallion and festoon decoration. Above the four feet, attachments for four curved arms extending in an S-shape with holders for slightly moulded, round bowls with voluted rims. Wooden case with remnants of seals and plaque with monogram "SMB" under a baronial crown. Marked, foam marks, master Emick Romer (active after 1759), year letter "a". Weight without glass insert approx. 2045 g. H. 35 cm. 42.5 cm x 42 cm.
Provenance: from the important collection of the Frankfurt banking family von Bethmann, which grew over generations.
Emick Romer was born in Norway, but lived in London from around 1724 to 1795. His works are exhibited in the Metropolitan Museum in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, among others. There is a comparable centrepiece in the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, inv. no. MAR.M.19 & A-I-1912.
