Magnificent courtly gold tabatiere à Deux-Couleurs from the estate of Sophie Marie Viktoria Princess and Margravine of Baden, Duchess of Zähringen and later Queen of Sweden (1862-1930), made by the court jewellers Carl Martin Weishaupt & Söhne
Yellow and red gold, enamelled. Quadripartite, curved and multi-profiled cartouche shape. Richly chiselled and engraved decoration on all sides with raised volutes, floral rosettes and rocailles over finely chased latticework. Fluted all round and the corner spandrels with scrollwork and foliage. Corresponding base. The hinged lid decorated with a royal blue enamelled, high oval medallion with a crowned cipher "V" set with diamond roses for Sophie Marie Viktoria, later Queen of Sweden. Marked "CMWS", court jewellers Carl Martin Weishaupt and Sons, Hanau, fineness mark for 585 gold and numbered 2548 on frame. Weight approx. 183.68 g. H. 4.1 cm x 9.8 cm x 7.4 cm. Original leather case.
An extremely fine goldsmith's design from the Carl Martin Weishaupt & Söhne jewellery factory founded in Hanau in 1801, which was known for its exquisite jewellery boxes and was awarded the Council Medal at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851 and the bronze medal in Paris in 1867. A large number of design sketches for such presentation boxes can be found in the archives of the State Drawing Academy in Hanau. Cf. Thiele, p. 164.
Provenance: According to family tradition, a gift from Sophie Marie Viktoria, later Queen of Sweden, to the prelate Karl Wilhelm Doll (1827-1905), an ancestor of the owner's family, who performed the marriage ceremony in Karlsruhe in 1881 with Crown Prince Oscar Gustaf Adolf Bernadotte, who was crowned King of Sweden as Gustav V in 1907.
