A splendid small Meissen courtly tureen, so-called "Drüselkästchen", for Maria Josepha of Austria, wife of King August III of Poland Oval, cambered, double-walled and ornamentally open-worked body with multiple cranked walls. Handles on the sides in the shape of a sculptural bust of a woman. Surrounded by small, fully sculpted putti, connected by applied cloth hangings and finely modelled flower festoons. Both sides of the wall crowned with shell-shaped cartouches with shopping scenes. Correspondingly designed, heavily moulded lid. Topped with two reclining putti holding the royal crown. Surrounding cartouches with the Electoral Saxon coat of arms, hunting and gallant scenes and purple-coloured merchant's decor in narrow, slightly recessed, gold-framed reserve fields. The underside of the lid with a colourfully painted floral relief. Gilt interior. Polychrome, partly purple-coloured camaieu painting with rich gold decoration. Designed by Johann Joachim Kaendler. Model no. B 136. Minimally rest./best.; crossed swords mark. H. 20 cm. This showpiece tureen in the form of a so-called "Drüselkästchen" with lid served to "store plucked threads to be used for embroidery and the like" and was originally designed for Maria Josepha of Austria, wife of King August III of Poland.
