Lot no. 157
Magnificent Meissen coffee service with "1001 Nights" decoration by Prof. Heinz Werner 16-piece set; coffee pot, milk jug, sugar bowl, 6 coffee cups with saucers, 6 cake plates and cake platter. Scenic depictions modelled on the tales of "1001 Nights" on the wall and in the mirror. Including a harem scene, a gondola ride with a moated castle, a peacock pedalling, discovered lovers and snake charmers. Polychrome painting with rich gilding and vermicelli pattern. Mould designed by Ludwig Zepner, decor designed by Prof. Heinz Werner. Partly worn; crossed swords mark. Jug h. 26,5 cm. Cup h. 8 cm. Platter d. 31 cm. As comprehensive and varied as the chinoiseries by Johann Gregorius Hoeroldt, Prof. Heinz Werner takes up the theme of the oriental fairy-tale world here. With more than 500 individual motifs, the "1001 Nights" service is the largest modern service produced by the Meissen manufactory. While the first scenes by Heinz Werner (1928 - 2019) from 1969 were still very much in the graphic style, the oriental motifs were given a highly painterly character with freely rhythmic, delicate brushwork, fragrant robes and filigree drapery when the subject matter was taken up again and further developed in the early 1970s. Cf. cat. Meissener Konturen, pp. 72, 90; Cat. Painting Patterns "1001 Nights", Staatl. Porzellan-Manufaktur Meissen GmbH, p. 5. A 16-piece porcelain coffee set with decor "1001 night" for six people. Form designed by L. Zepner and decor by Prof. H. Werner. Partly rubbed. Crossed swords mark. Meissen. After 1973.
