François-Simon-Alphonse Giroux (1776-1848) set up his shop around 1799 in the rue du Coq-Saint-Honoré in Paris. He sold all sorts of curiosities, tableware and stationery. Around the 1820s, he specialised in the manufacture of refined objects. Kings Louis XVIII and Charles X bought presents for Princess Louise and the Duke of Bordeaux. Around 1825-1830, Giroux expanded into cabinetmaking. In 1827, it supplied the furniture for the King's bedroom and was awarded a silver medal at the 1834 Exhibition for its furniture. In 1838, the company was taken over by his two sons, Alphonse-Gustave (1810-1886) and André (1801-1879), and renamed Alphonse Giroux et Cie. In 1855, A. Giroux & Cie took part in the Universal Exhibition in Paris, where it presented a lindenwood day-happy carved with a luxuriant naturalist décor, purchased for Compiègne by Empress Eugénie.
