PRINCE SIDDHARTA RENOUNCES THE WORLD AND CUTS HIS HAIR Thailand, late 19th century Gouache on silk canvas, in the upper register a large stupa surrounded by celestial beings, Prince Siddhartha, the future Buddha, cuts his hair with the royal sword, surrounded by disciples, on the right, the coachman Chandaka dressed in modern clothes carries the royal attributes of the prince, in borders with stylised palmettes, two wooden sticks at the ends of the scroll.
